At UnionHub, our team members come from all kinds of backgrounds, and each person brings a unique perspective to the work we do. Take Anna Schmidt, for example—a full-stack software engineer whose path to tech began in the emergency room.
From Nurse to Engineer
Before writing code, Anna worked as a critical care and ER nurse. “I loved the intensity and problem-solving that came with nursing,” she recalls. But during COVID, she and her partner Mike decided to try something new: learning to code together.
What started as a hobby quickly grew into a passion.
“As a nurse, I was helping a handful of patients each day. With software development, I realized I could build tools that impact thousands. That possibility was exciting.”
Armed with a biology degree, a BS in nursing, and a newly earned full-stack development certificate from Flatiron School, Anna transitioned into software engineering and soon found her home at UnionHub.
Building Tools That Empower
Anna began her journey at UnionHub focused on front-end development, but curiosity drove her deeper into backend and database architecture. “Right now, I’m learning a lot about multi-tenancy and database design,” she explains.
She’s especially proud of her work on UnionHub’s active coverage features.
“These tools help people manage re-enrollments and coverage changes with more confidence. I love building features that empower users to take ownership of their benefits.”

A Culture of Teamwork and Curiosity
When asked what stands out about UnionHub, Anna doesn’t hesitate:
“I’m proud of the culture we’ve built. Teamwork and adaptability drive us. If priorities change, we pivot together. Curiosity is encouraged, kindness comes first, and no one carries a challenge alone.”
That spirit of collaboration resonates deeply with Anna, who values being part of a team that supports both personal growth and collective success.
Life Outside of Code
True to her Colorado roots, Anna spends much of her free time outdoors. Trail running is a favorite—her go-to is Crested Butte’s iconic 401 trail, and she’s even competed in the Grand Traverse, a grueling race from Crested Butte to Aspen. She’s also an avid skier, hiker, paddle boarder, and camper.
When she’s not exploring the mountains, Anna enjoys traveling (especially to try new foods), reading sci-fi and fantasy novels, and spending time with her two cats, Huxley and Asha.
Looking Ahead
Anna’s journey shows how past experiences can shape new opportunities. Her nursing background instilled resilience, empathy, and a love for problem-solving—qualities she now applies to building technology that improves lives.
As she puts it:
“I’ve grown so much here, both technically and personally. It feels good knowing the work we’re doing at UnionHub really makes a difference.”
